Free RSS Reader with Search (Flex/AIR with PHP Proxy) Open Source

May 29, 2008

So I made this awhile ago as an experiment. It seemed to me that Flex was perfect for an interactive RSS Reader. A lot of people have problems with getting remote RSS feeds (and my solution I am sure is not perfect). If anyone finds a better solution please pass it on in the comments. This piece of code is AIR, but I also have a web-based Flex version available (see demo link below). This RSS Reader uses PHP to get the RSS feed from the remote site. I have included all the code and assets for the AIR version and the Flex version. Please use it and learn from it and then make it better.

Please post links to anywhere you use it and tell me if you like it. I love to hear that some of these Flex projects are appreciated!

Features:

  • Retrieves multiple RSS Feeds
  • Searches for multiple keywords in each post’s title and description then ranks them by how many keywords matched
  • Re-arrangeable Search Keywords with Drag and Drop Easy of Use
  • Run from Web or Desktop
  • Uses purely Open Source Software and Open Source Code
  • Free (Just Like All Weber Design Labs Products)

Hi There. Interesting. While adding some feeds to your demo, I get 1090 Parsing error. A specific feed example is http://www.immobilienmanager.de/?id=8&type=100

I also see it in the code running in debug mode. Any ideas what is going on?
  • Hey Waqas!

    Thanks for commenting.
To answer your question, yes - Flex does compile into one swf (sometimes with multiple assets). However, it is very hard to tell these days if something is a Flex application because you can disable the right click menu in Flex that would usually come up for any Flash content. I took a look at pageonce and visualcv. Just from the stylings of them it looks like pageonce is ajax, but visualcv is Flex (I believe). Here is an excellent example of Flex in the wild: http://www.viewzi.com

It is not possible to make a Flex application without a swf. However if you make your application an AIR file, then your user will never see the swf,

I would love it if you send me a link to the plugin your suggesting. Always love suggestions from anyone.

    Thanks!
  • Cool...!

Your blog is a great place to get lots of information. Actually i m new to flex and while googling on google, i came across your page. I heard that you are a flex lover so i wanted to ask you a possibility in flex? Some was saying that www.pageonce.com and www.visualcv.com is made in flex, but upon starting my work in flex i felt that what ever we'll make in flex will be compiled as a single swf file and hence its compulsory that the visitor will get rite click flash menu if the site is made in flex.. And that is what not happening in the URLS i mentioned. So do letme know if its possible to make flex apps without swf files.

One thing i would request you is that you must use a wp plugin for comment subscription. As now i have to check back again and again to see if you have replied me or not. If you like i'll send u that plugin for wp.

    Thanks
