Taylormade Sim Dhy & Udi Utility Iron Review
Golfalot approached me about trying these best Taylormade irons. I initially thought that maybe it wasn’t the right time for me. I am a massive hybrid fan and I have never used 2 Taylormade irons in my life.
They’re also gamed by Dustin Johnson, which is another reason why I’ve never thought they’d be for me as my game is about as far away from DJ’s as is humanly possible!
Even so, the new 2 irons today don’t even come close to the old ones Seve and Ben Hogan used years ago. They were easy enough to hold the ball with, so I bought them.
TaylorMade’s SIM DHY (Driving Hybrid), and UDI (“Ultimate Driving Iron”) are designed for golfers who like the performance and look of a long-iron over a hybrid, fairway or wood.
Taylormade Sim Udi & Dhy Utility iron Verdict
The new Taylormade’s SIM UDI hit me better than I thought, but it still doesn’t replace my hybrid. Unless you play a link course where there is little trouble on the greens for you to drive the ball up.
I realize that it is an honor to be able to play with one of the greatest and best clubs in my bag.
Unfortunately, I’m not a SIM DHY user. It just got a little too high.
This reminds me of the original Ping cross-over, which I attempted to play while on tour but could not get along with due to its bulky head and large sole.
But I do know that many people who I have taught find the 3 Wood and Driver to be their arch nemesis. So having something that is friendly and can be used on both shorter approaches into the green and off it could prove very useful.

Whom is It Aimed at?
The UDI is aimed at the player wanting a more penetrating ball flight with a slightly more compact look behind the ball, and is probably more suited towards the better golfer. This is the right UDI for those who want more accuracy with their irons and a bit more forgiveness to help them hit the ball.
The DHY is for the player that wants to look like DJ but can’t launch the ball. This club certainly helps that and helps players off the tee who struggle to hit woods, hybrids or long irons. The club can be used to ‘get your ball in play’ from both the tee or on approach into the green.
Taylor. SIM UDI pro: Penetrating, low-launching ball flight. This new head shape will work well for more golfers. SIM UDI Cons Ball flow was a little too narrow for those with higher handicaps Taylor. Made SIM DHY Pros Easy to launch Useful if you struggle with your woods Forgiving profile may give some players more confidence Taylor. Sim DHY cons Large head shape. Ball flight was too high.
So. So. .Whaddaya Think?
I would be very interested to hear what you think about the UDI.
While I did have some fun with the Mini Driver, you guys were more than willing to let me. This surprised me.
While I may be mocking, the Mini has proved to be the most useful addition to my bag in this crazy game. The Mini was initially not designed to be played from the fairway. They were unfounded. I hit it higher than any fairway golf wood I’ve played and hit it confidently every where (except from side hill lies).
Can the UDI be equally versatile? If I’m able to get a Mini through 3-foot heather then most people should be able to hit a UDI from a fairway or out of the rough.
That said, I really don’t know where the UDI make sense for most guys (I did say the same about the Mini). Are you going to carry this in your purse every day? Does it serve a purpose? It could be a club that you bought out of nostalgia but don’t use beyond banging at the range.
Does it even make sense to you spend money on?
Is it all about?
Continuing the SIM (Shape In Motion) theme first seen at the beginning of the year with the release of the SIM Drivers Fairway Woods , the utilities feature noticeably different shapes and profiles which define how they perform out on the course.
SIM DHY features a greater overall footprint, thicker top line and wider sole. The SIM DHY’s profile is flattering to hybrids and is more likely to allow for ultimate forgiveness.
Taylor is slightly more aerodynamic due to Taylor’s hollow body construction. Made offers several other utility iron options.
SIM UDI features a compact design with a narrower lead edge, slimmer sole and top line, as well as minimal offset. It is designed to help better players feel more confident at the address.
Unlike the DHY, the weight port is placed on the rear of the club in order to raise the CG slightly, helping to promote a lower launch and more penetrating ball flight.
Models have a rounded sole, which is inspired from SIM Max Rescue and designed to improve turf interaction in uneven areas.
