La Jolla Shores is an active beach community that stretches for miles along a crescent-shaped stretch of sand. These beaches are popular for both surfers and family members. They're also home to the Scripps International of Oceanography Pier. The area, which is protected from the elements by La Jolla Bay serves as a launch pad for kayaking and diving. At night it's alive with the glow of beach fires.
Torrey Pines State Beach lies at the northernmost point La Jolla. A nature walk through the native vegetation, including the Torrey Pine, along the 300-foot high sea cliffs gives you endless views over the Pacific. Here you'll find long stretches of beach ideal for sunbathing and family fun adjacent to a large parking area. Black's Beach is further south. This is an extremely difficult spot to get to and dangerously hazardous. However, it's a popular spot for local bodyboarders as well as surfers.
La Jolla Cove, a tiny bay in deep waters, is flanked with sea caves that can be accessed by kayakers and walkers depending on tides. Although small, it has a lot of appeal for swimmers and snorkelers who are looking to find local species like Garibaldi fish (bright orange) and other marine creatures. Just below the large park is a walkway that leads to the Cove. This walkway has bathrooms and showers. Picnic tables are available.
Children's Pool is located in downtown La Jolla, just a few steps from La Jolla Cove. This small cove is protected by a concrete barrier wall. It was built originally as a safe area for children. But, it was taken over by seals or sea lions long ago. Although now closed for swimming, the Children's Pool offers a crowd-pleasing and often amusing view of these loveable marine inhabitants.
Keep going south until you reach Hospitals. Hospitals is an excellent reef but not a beach. Here are some beautiful tide pools to explore along the coast at low tide. Although the conditions are not always ideal, this is the most popular dive spot in town. There are dramatic underwater arches and lobster-filled ledges. The Hospitals surf spot is located at the southern end of the gazebo, which offers the most northern La Jolla's dive spots.
Windansea can be found south of the capital. Windansea beach is well-known for its rich, low-water tide pools and popularity. This spot is popular for surfing and attracts a lot of local surfers. Swimming and bodyboarding are best on the south half of the beach.
