How We Picked
Our guide was restricted to only the most used national options. This included all three major nationwide carriers as well their prepaid service subsidiaries. Then we added any services that were high in survey results from J.D. Power.
That’s big three, not big four: T-Mobile concluded its purchase of Sprint in April 2020 and took the Sprint website offline in August 2020. T-Mobile has already begun to use Sprint’s 5G frequencies in its own network.
A few competitors are available in only certain regions of the US, so we excluded them. This meant that U.S. Cellular, the regional carrier, and resold service of cable companies like Spectrum were eliminated. These services require subscribers to residential broadband in order to receive their advertised prices. Additionally, we eliminated prepaid services which required additional purchases of voice minutes or data to fulfill our monthly usage limitations.
This left us with these services to test:
AT&T Wireless prepaid programs – its prepaid brand Cricket Wireless T-Mobile prepaid alternative – its Metro-by-T-Mobile Verizon Wireless prepaid option – its prepaid prepaid brand Visible Boost Mobile – formerly a Sprint prepaid label and now a Dish Network reseller Consumer Cellular – an AT&T reseller Google Fi – a Google service based resold coverage by T-Mobile and U.S Cellular Mint Mobile – a T-Mobile retailer Republic Wireless -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile -Mobile GB and moderate to 15 GB. You can use one gigabyte for email, web browsing and navigation with Google Maps / Apple Maps. Five gigabytes should provide enough data for frequent social media usage. 15 GB would be adequate for people who frequently play online games or stream video.
They are calculated using data from the fourth-quarter of 2019. NPD Group, an industry research company, discovered that US smartphone owners use 9.4 GB per monthly on average but only 4.3 gigabytes in median. Brad Akyuz an analyst explained the breakdown between mean and median usage after noting earlier that that “the overall average figure has skewed up because a relatively small amount of heavy users” has caused that number to drop. While more people are staying at home due to the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdowns, there is no doubt that life outside Wi-Fi will resume in certain areas.
According to our cost estimations, anyone who uses 5 GB of LTE data per month or more would prefer to utilize their mobile hotspot to share LTE bandwidth as much as possible. This is not to reduce 3G speed or make things worse (as some “unlimited” plans demand).
