Does Aldi Own Trader Joe’S In 2022? (You’Ll Be Surprised)
A cult brand, Trader Joe’s is known for its Californian laid-back vibe, affordable prices, and unusual goods. Many have created Facebook groups or entire websites to support the more than 500 locations located across the United States.
Aldi to Own Trading Joe’s by 2022
Aldi Nord owns Trader Joe’s. It is not the Aldi supermarket that North American shoppers know. Trader Joe’s is owned by Aldi Nord, which was formed when the two brothers who founded the Albrecht Discount chain in Germany parted ways. Aldi Sud oversees Aldi US operations.
Do There Exist Two Aldi’s in the World?
There are two Aldi entities, and before we can get into the details of how one of those Aldi companies took over Trader Joe’s, it’s important to understand a little bit about the history of the Albrecht family.
The Albrecht matriarch started the family’s first grocery in Essen in 1900, but Germany had suffered two World Wars. The Albrecht brothers Theo & Karl returned to the former war and took the control of running the store.
The Brothers saw the very poor conditions around them. They decided to make a business out of pantry basics at ultra-low prices. After the company’s growth, multiple shops were opened across Germany.
They lived together until the 1960s. Then, the brothers could no longer agree on selling cigarettes. Karl was against the idea. He believed that it would draw shoplifters.
Theo assumed control over Aldi Nord while Karl was at Aldi Sud’s helm.
What Year Did Aldi Nord Retake Trader Joe’s Restaurant?
Aldi Sud was able to expand to the US by 1976. That is significant because Aldi Nord bought Trader Joe’s in three years.
We can guess that they wanted an entry point to the States that didn’t confuse customers by sharing a name and chain.
Joe Coulombe, the founder and CEO of Trader Joe’s in 1979 (there is a Joe! He sold his company to Theo Albrecht (CEO of Aldi Nord).
AldiReviewer.com’s writer reached out to Trader Joe’s in order to find out how closely Aldi Nord’s and Trader Joe’s operate. The TJ representative replied that they do not work independently.
Aldi Nord’s subsidiary Trader Joe’s operates in its own territory.
What exactly is Trader Joe’s?
Theo Albrecht made the California chain a great investment by sharing some background information about Trader Joe’s.
Joe Coulombe (a Stanford University grad) founded Trader Joe’s. Coulombe began his career in convenience stores and drugstores. Coulombe purchased six Pronto Markets which Coulombe had managed to liquidate them.
It was late 1950. Coulombe was to change his business model and make his stores stand out in a sea of 7 Elevens filled with eclectic, unique finds.
The restaurant was renamed Trader Joe’s after a Los Angeles tiki bar (“Trader Vic’s”) in the late 1960s. Aldi Nord accepted their offer shortly thereafter.
And it’s easy to see why. Coulombe’s business model included more than simply finding random things and then putting them all together.
He curated expensive goods from discontinued items or overstocks, so he could save money and pass it on to the customer. This sounds familiar?
Whether or not that type of product (high-end/gourmet foods at low prices) made the Aldi Nord purchase of Trader Joe’s intentional, today it’s one of the biggest draws for both Aldi Sud and Trader Joe’s stores, and part of the reason middle-to-upper-class shoppers flock to both.
Are Trader Joe’s and Aldi Selling The Same Products?
Though some believe that Trader Joe’s US imports their store labels products from different wholesalers (so we haven’t been able to find any direct evidence), both stores stock similar items. In one case, Aldi appears to have copied.
The most famous example is Trader Joe’s cult favourite Everything But the Bagel Seasoning. They launched it in 2017. Aldi produced their own version two years later, using their Stonemill seasonings name, called Everything Bagel seasoning.
There are also similar products like wine for cheap (Trader Joe’s sells Two Buck Chuck and Aldi’s Winking Owl brand is $2.50/bottle), gourmet cheeses such as naan, butter, and almonds.
It appears that Trader Joe’s stores carry a greater variety of similar products, since Aldi’s inventory is constrained by space and design. Image granola, pickles and fruit spreads elevated.
Trader Joe’s is lighter on the pantry staples, though – a quick look at Trader Joe’s ” For the Pantry ” page online reveals few practical basics. Their 5-lb bag of all-purpose flour sells for $3.99, while the same item sells for $1.15 at Aldi.
While there may be some overlap in the product offerings of both, they each compete for that disposable income dollar and have made it their mission at all costs to sell at extremely low price points.
It could also be said that Trader Joe’s or Aldi occupy very distinct niches while occasionally crossing over to each other’s lane.
Is Trader Joe’s Better Than Aldi?
Aldi’s stock consists of 90% store-label goods and Trader Joe’s 80%. Many people are left wondering how they compare in quality.
Aldi wins almost automatically in one area. What’s the reason? Trader Joe’s is known to have bad produce.
Thekitchn.com’s writer even published an entire article on the poor quality of TJ’s fresh fruit and vegetables. He commented on the excessive packaging of fresh produce and the bulk bagging of goods (potentially leading home to waste).
Aldi produces has had its fair share of critics, but the chain has improved their product in recent years by sourcing locally, and receiving daily shipments.
Aldi and TJ have about the same quality produce. They both deliver in the unique and fun food categories. Shoppers are fond of Trader Joe’s Black Truffle Cashew Pasta, Vegan Bolognese and French Onion Mc & Cheese.
Aldi shoppers love the Girl Scout cookie dupes and the super-cheap center-cut bacon at $4 per pack! pineapple mimosa bottle.
Aldi Nord is the owner of Trader Joe’s. It’s an independent entity that operates Aldi Sud and all Aldi US stores in America.
Even though the distinction may be confusing (and even misleading), at first, ultimately the differences have led to some fierce competition, and the resulting innovation on both sides has made grocery shopping a lot of fun.
Aldi’S Own Trader Joe’S
Aldi Nord owns Trader Joe’s in the States, but the Aldi stores that you see in the States are run by Aldi Sud, which is separate from Trader Joe’s. These chains can be compared to distant cousins. May 1, 2019.

Aldi U.S. BB#.116756 is often mistaken for Trader Joe’s BB#.162286. However, it’s not. While the two chains have some similarities, with both following a low-price, private-label-dependent strategy, they are independently owned and operated.Jul 19, 2019
