There will be a time when your car battery needs to be changed. A core charge is the hidden cost of buying a brand new battery.
Walmart handles this particular charge in a different way depending on the retailer. This is everything you need about Walmart’s core battery charge policies.
Walmart has a program called the battery core charger that allows customers who have old automobile batteries to be returned for recycling. It can be displayed on receipts as a “Merchandising Cost”. If returning a car battery purchased from Walmart in-store, customers can receive a $5-$20 battery core charge refund received in cash or store credit.
How much is the Walmart battery core charge when I buy a new battery?
When you purchase a battery at Walmart, the battery’s core charge is usually shown on your receipt.
You can often find it under the heading “Merchandising fee” if it’s not mentioned.
Additionally, the amount you have to pay may vary from state to state, but will generally be in the range of $5-20.
How can I request a reimbursement for my Walmart battery core charger?
You can usually get your core charged back if your battery is returned to Walmart.
The answer to this question will vary depending on whether the battery you are using is from Walmart, and if your receipt can be used as proof.
Rules on core charges are different between states, so if your old battery wasn’t from Walmart, then it is worth calling your local store to see whether their policy allows battery trade-ins from other retailers.
How do I receive a return on my Walmart battery core charge
You can take your car’s old battery, purchased at Walmart to Walmart customer service with you original receipt.
The charge will be returned once the receipt is scanned. You may get a refund to your card or in cash.
A refund of the battery core may not be possible if the battery was purchased at Walmart, or you have lost your receipt. This is dependent on each store’s policies, which can vary between states.
EverStart batteries could be one exception. EverStart is a Walmart brand that falls under the Walmart warranty. This means an employee may have the ability to access details on the purchase using the serial number.

Walmart adds a Battery Core Charge to all Car Battery Purchases. This charge is generally quite cheap, and it can be fully refundable provided that the battery has been returned to Walmart by the end of its useful life.
However, if you lose the receipt or bought your old battery somewhere other than Walmart, you should check with your local store whether you can trade it in for a core charge refund.
