Features
The best backpacks for travel will have the same features. This is more about personal preference than any hard and fast rules on what features to search for. Here are a few features you’ll want to research:
Main compartment access: Most backpacks for travel will either be front-loading or top-loading. The more practical backpacks that are front-loading can be found here. It’s much easier to access and organize your essential travel gear with a front-loader.
Suspension that can be stowed away: Many backpacks have a place to hide the hip belt and shoulder straps. You can use your backpack to check luggage by using a stowaway device. The straps will not get caught in belt conveyors, or break.
Zippered pockets. The amount of gear that you intend to bring with you will determine how many zippered internal pockets and external pockets. There are some backpacks that have more compartments than others. To protect your belongings from theft, look for zippers that lock.
Water resistance: Make sure the bag can withstand water. Although waterproofing isn’t an option, many bag manufacturers make waterproof covers for their bags.
You need to have good compression straps for your gear. Adventurers with more gear than the average traveller will want to look for a backpack with plenty of gear loops or daisy chains. They’ll help to strap on all your accessories externally.
Hiking Specific Packs
Gregory Baltoro Osprey Atmos AG Travel Backpacks The best backpacks for travelers. It is difficult to pick the right backpack when there are so many choices. While I was backpacking in Europe for the first time, I discovered that backpacks made from hiking materials were too suited to European travel.
There are two main types of travel backpacks, and each comes with its pros and cons. Travel backpacks are more common than hiking backpacks. Hiking backpacks are backpacking backpacks that can be used for long trips into the backcountry. These are the two main categories I am breaking this blog post down.
We’ll start with the specific men’s travel backpacks as it’s my favorite category and what I recommend most travelers use on their trip. Don’t be a slave to bulky hiking backpacks. Choose something sleeker, more modern and stylish. Then we’ll move on to the hiking-specific men’s travel backpacks. These are amazing backpacks that men can use for hiking.
The Best Travel Backpacks
For business travels or a resort vacation, a good suitcase or carry-on bag will serve you well. However, they’re not well-suited for hopping on and off buses and trains or walking long distances over uneven terrain.

Frequent Travelers’ Top Picks for Long-Distance Travel Backpacks
Getty Images/Maurice Ambler. Carrying your clothes, toiletries, gear, and other items for a month in a backpack can seem like an impossible task, especially if it’s not something you are used to. Traveling with a backpack can be easier in certain situations, such as when you plan to travel by bus or train, or if there is limited access to paved roads that allow for luggage-rolling. Finding a backpack for travel that fits all of your needs and is comfortable is the challenge. In order to assist you in choosing the perfect carry-on backpack or backpack for long travels, I talked to seven regular travelers, who often spend several weeks out on the road, hiking, and talking about what bags they love to take with them.
High Sierra Titan 55-Light Frame Pack. “I recommend the High Sierra Titan 95L Frame Backpack. It’s lightweight, affordable, strong, stylish, and very comfortable. I have used it for my trips from Bolivia to Botswana. I also love its ergonomic design. The straps can be easily adjusted so that the bag perfectly fits my body. It has two compartments: the top, which is where I keep my underwear, and the front, which will be used for shoes. The bag’s middle compartment is large and ideal for clothing. I can pack quite a lot of things in the bag, but because it’s tall and narrow, it still remains sleek and fairly easy to carry.” Oneika Raymond , travel journalist and host, Travel Channel’s Big City, Little Budget and One Bag and You’re Out
Our Choice
Peak Design 45L Backpack for Long Trips with Expensive Gear. These accessory cubes will cost you extra.
$300 at REI. $300 at Best Buy. $300 from Backcountry. This is for: If you travel frequently with high-end camera equipment and require easy access to storage. Or if you prefer backpacks that allow for customization and adaptability.
Bags in this class are designed to carry luggage. Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L has the ability to be modified. The Peak Design 45L backpack is the Swiss Army knife for backpacks. Flexible, adaptable and even customizable (if you want extra cubes or organizers), this bag can almost be used as a mobile gearhead. Many bags have no expanding capabilities and look as unattractive as boiled ham when they are opened from their plastic containers. Peak Design, however, looks as great fully packed as at 45 liters.
The bag can be accessed through the rear panel. This doubles as a laptop and tablet pocket, as well, when you zip the pass-through divided. You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps that run along each side of the pack. The Travel Backpack’s natural size is 35 liters. However, an expansion zipper allows the bag to hold 45 liters. You can use the bag to carry a small daypack by folding in the corners. While it is still larger than the normal daypack, this bag can be used as your everyday explorer and travel bag. Any configuration of the Travel Backpack is great. The bag itself consists of 400D nylon and polyester fabrics. The bag feels sturdy, but it’s not as strong as our other tests, including the Cotopaxi Allpa The Peak Design which lets you store its hip and shoulder straps when they’re not being used. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. After you play with them you will wonder why no backpack has something like this. The Peak Design is a little bit childish in that I still love to tuck the straps away when the Peak Design goes into the overhead bin. The straps, although they aren’t as thick as the Tortuga one, feel comfortable. While the hip belt might not feel as luxurious as the Tortuga one, they are still comfortable.
Best Bag If You Need A Large Suitcase On Your Back: Tortuga Outbreaker 45L Backpack
Tortuga Outbreaker 45L backpack A lightweight, waterproof, and easy-to-travel with suitcase. You won’t feel uncomfortable wearing it over long distances if the weight isn’t an issue.
The bag you choose if the following: It will maximize your packing space and be customizable to any length torso (there is also a 35L version, but we are having stock problems with that), durable, water-resistant and offers organizational features suitable for digital nomads.
Outbreaker can fit into any available carry-on. Outbreaker is a perfect combination of luggage and backpack. A tear-resistant and waterproof sailcloth provides protection from both sharp objects and the elements. The sealed zippers on the exterior provide excellent protection. Open the main clamshell zipper to find a large interior. There are a few organization features, including a front panel that is great for keeping track electronics and chargers. The bag can also be packed easily. Out of all of the bags that we tried, the Tortuga Outbreaker was the most balanced between the carry comfort of a hiking bag and the storage and organization features of a piece luggage.
Just as important, thanks to the adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system (borrowed from hiking backpacks), the Outbreaker is the most adjustable bag we’ve tested three years in a row. The bag is slightly heavier than the Peak Design Travel Backpack, at just over 5 pounds. There is a 45-liter Outbreaker bag, the maximum size for a carry on bag. We also tested the 35-liter version. It is compatible with several intra-European standards. While the smaller version of the Outbreaker is good for short-term travel and minimalists, the Allpa’s space-saving design makes it a great choice. Because both sizes are adjustable to your torso, the Outbreaker is able to be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of sizes. This design (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best of those we’ve tested at distributing the weight of an otherwise fairly heavy bag. These straps are effective in reducing the overall bag weight over moderate distances.
The Outbreaker’s interior, which is designed to be a good luggage, has a minimalistic design that makes packing easy. The main compartment is large and has four pockets along its sides. However, these inner pockets are too small to hold socks or small items such as toiletries. There are two vents in the lid that can hold shoes or dirty laundry.
There are 10 bags that can be used for work, travel, and tech.
These bags have a smart design and are durable.
Bags designed for men will be well-padded and protected. A bag must also fit your lifestyle. This could be a backpack that is tech-forward or one that can help you get through TSA. Or a small pack that allows you to go from work to exercise without having to stuff it. While some backpacks have multiple pockets and a laptop pouch, others are stylish enough to use at the office, while still being durable enough to take with you on the road. Also, it’s helpful for the bag to be intuitively filled and accessible on the spot. This can be achieved with a simple water bottle cover.
We are implying that the choice of backpack is entirely up to you. There are many options for men’s backpacks. So we’ve broken it down for you, highlighting the best backpacks for work, the best backpacks for travel, and the best everyday backpacks that do a little bit of everything (including store the many parenting items you need ). It doesn’t matter whether you are looking for an elegant men’s backpack or something that works well for commutes, weekend trips, and the workplace, we have it all.

Osprey Farpoint55 55 Travel Pack, Men’s Larger, designed for long torsos. The backpack has the largest removable daypack we’ve tested and comes with a lifetime guarantee. The pack also comes in two sizes.
$180 from REI $180 from Backcountry $180 from Amazon Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Pack – Men’s and the slightly smaller Osprey Fairview 55 Travel Pack – Women’s are excellent backpacks they’re just not quite as comfortable or adjustable as the Ruckpack. These bags, like all our choices, have adjustable straps and can be unzipped as a backpack. This bag is made out of strong ripstop nylon just like the Ruckpacks. Unlike the Ruckpacks, though, the Ospreys have straps that are not height-adjustable. Both sizes are available in 2 different sizes. One is larger and one smaller, while the other holds 56 liters. These daypacks come with both Fairview and Farpoint, and are slightly larger that the ones with REI’s Ruckpacks. That is something photographers will love and any other person who has to take more gear with them. Osprey has the highest warranty among our top picks, with a lifetime replacement guarantee.
