Best Winter Jacket, The North Face McMurdoParka ($350). Fill capacity: 600.-fill-power Down Weight: 3. lbs. 4.6 oz.
We like warm, waterproof and reasonable prices.
What we don’t recommend: Lighter and more compact than jackets with performance features.
The McMurdo Winter Jacket from The North Face is a good value for money. The McMurdo Parka from North Face covers every important detail: It’s waterproof and warm. We also like the extra-long cut at the upper thigh, which provides good coverage and allows for plenty of movement. TNF updated their sustainability policy to include recycled down fabrics and DWR-free DWR. The McMurdo, at $350, will cost you significantly less than the other more costly parkas.
What are the shortcomings of The North Face McMurdo Parka? It is designed to look casual and not be worn in the backcountry. Additionally, it won’t offer the same heat for weight and compressibility of jackets like the ones with thinner shells (800-fill-power up or more). They shouldn’t cause any problems for day-to-day use which is exactly the reason why McMurdo is popular. Plus, we love the jacket. The faux fur at the hood could be a deterrent. Although the Arctic Parka does not share its name, it has many similarities, such as full waterproofing, cozy interiors, and an removable faux fur liner on the hood.

How to Use Insulation in Winter Coats. The most commonly used insulation types are wool, synthetic materials and down. While each has its advantages, the method they keep you warm are similar. Your body creates heat by heating the air between the filaments and fibers. Hsiou-Lien Ch, associate professor at Oregon State University and textile researcher, says that air is the most effective insulator. The material that traps air will be more efficient at insulation. Here are the details and tips to help you choose.
The spherical appearance of down clusters is created by the numerous filaments that are divergent from a common point. These clusters provide the highest warmth-to-weight ratio of all insulators. These clusters can collapse when they are wet. This reduces their capacity to retain warmth. For winter weather like snow, rain and sleet you should look for a jacket with either a waterproof or water-resistant shell. You can also use hydrophobic down to keep your body warm. It is made by coating filaments with durable water repellent (DWR). You should expect to pay higher prices for down because it is made from duck and goose feathers.
Polyester insulation is made up of terephthalic acids and ethyleneglyl. These are petroleum derivatives. It’s increasingly becoming common for these compounds to be sourced from recycled water bottles. This creates a fiber that is crimped in order to achieve air-trapping loft. Then, the fabric can be spun into a single bolt. The North Face’s ThermoBall and Patagonia’s PlumaFill are two examples of more advanced synthetic insulation. They mimic down using ultra-fine threads, clustered patterns, and have a lot of other features. Regardless of shape, synthetic insulation is generally cheaper to produce than down and better at retaining its insulating power when wet, but still can’t quite compete with down when it comes to pure warmth.
Some coats skip down and synthetic insulation altogether and rely on wool instead. The organic threads are similar in shape to polyester fibers but have more room for air. Wool is also a poor conductor of heat, meaning your warmth stays within the jacket well. Wool is a very good insulation material. It can also absorb moisture up 30 percent more than its weight. Wool is therefore often worn in casual-use jackets rather than performance-oriented jackets.
Fill Power and Gram Ratings When you’re shopping, pay attention to the fill power of down or the weight of synthetic insulation that’s used in winter coats. A fill power refers to the loft produced by one ounce (or more) of down. Higher numbers indicate better quality down. Winter coats typically have between 500 and 800-fill. It is measured in grams/square meter. A thicker insulation will typically have a higher percentage. Most synthetic insulation for winter coats is less than 200-gram.

Even though your legs can be moving around on a cycle, your torso is still attached to the bicycle. Keeping them warm by wearing a great fitting winter cycling jackets is paramount, not only for your riding enjoyment, but as the key controllers of your bike, in keeping you safe too.
Winter racing is different from a leisurely commute through the winter months. Your specific requirements will require careful consideration. The right winter cycling jacket should be able to balance the heat and cold.

In that the design is race cut, lightweight, and very bulky, it reminds us of Castelli Alpha ROS 2 winter coat.
Even though it might not be accurate to call it level pegging like the Castelli, the fabric is remarkable breathable. It was windproof and waterproof, which makes it ideal for open-road driving.
In an ideal world, we’d like to see a slightly longer rear to the jacket, it took away some of the waterproofing perfection. It would also be remis of us not to point out the imbalance in the gender colour options – but at least it’s actually a wearable colour that the women get – although a high-viz option would be nice too.
These are the Top Winter Cycling Jackets
As we have already mentioned, the winter cycling jacket is a major investment. Therefore, it’s crucial to understand your specific needs. We have some tips to help you choose the perfect jacket for your needs.
Breathability A jacket that has poor breathability can make you feel miserable. The inside of a jacket with poor breathability can make it difficult to protect your skin from the sun.
Breathability refers to the quantity of water vapour that can flow through a given area of material in 24 hours. A value of 10,000-20,000g/m2/24hrs tends to be fine for a steady ride, but if you are putting in some spicy efforts you’ll want to be looking in the range of 20,000-40,000g/m2/24hrs.
It’s important to remember that even jackets with high levels of waterproofing will let in water through large holes.
Waterproof vs Water resistance If you plan on riding through truly biblical conditions, you’ll need a jacket that can stand up to the deluge.
To test fabric for waterproofness, measure its Hydrostatic Head. The Hydrostatic Head is the height at which water can stand on the fabric before it penetrates the fabric. A waterproof jacket should have a thickness of at least 10,000mm. You can go up to 20,000mm to provide more protection.
That said, the more waterproof a fabric is, the less breathable it tends to be. Recently, there have been more waterproof “softshell” jackets. These jackets are comfortable enough for dry riding without feeling too clammy, and they can survive a rain shower but not a torrential downpour. The jacket is ideal for riding in the rain and makes it a much easier choice when choosing a jacket.
