Aldi supermarket chain from Germany has enjoyed a strong presence in the US ever since the 1970s. Lidl rival has recently claimed its spot. Lidl has 100 locations, while Aldi boasts over 2,000+.
When comparing Aldi vs Lidl, there are many similarities such as both grocery stores selling private label products, a focus on passing on savings to customers, and store locations (10,000 Aldi stores and 11,200 Lidl stores globally). Additionally, both Aldi and Lidl were started by the Albrecht brothers.
While there were rumors that Aldi was cheaper than Lidl (from a variety of websites), I found it to be not true. After comparing some random items, however, I am not certain that is the case. I first looked at produce.
Aldi sells a 12-ounce bag of organic Kale Greens for $2.89. However, a smaller bag (ten ounces) is only $2.79 and it’s on sale for $2.29.
A pack of three green bell peppers at Aldi sell for the low price of $2.19 per pack; Lidl sells them for $1.99 each (and they knock about 60 cents off when they’re on sale).
So I was surprised to find that baking staples were showing more improvement. A 2-lb bag of light brown sugar sells for $1.29 at Aldi, and it’s the same at Lidl.
I did find a difference in extra virgin olive oil, however. Aldi’s containers sell for 18 cents an ounce. Lidl’s are 22.8 cents.
Aldi also beat Lidl in pure vanilla extract. This is a product that costs more than flour or sugar. Aldi sells two fluid ounces for $3.25 and Lidl is $3.39.
Although it’s impossible to compare each item at every store, it’s obvious that Aldi could be cheaper than Lidl in certain items. However, Lidl is still competitive all around.
Perhaps the most significant discrepancy between Aldi & Lidl lies in the differences between their locations.
Aldi operates over 2,000 stores across the US. These include 37 US states. Batavia is Ill.
Lidl is a small, local company that has expanded only in stateside since 2017. They have 100 locations, and more are in development. Their stores are mostly located on the East coast. Virginia serves as the headquarters.
Aldi also has 10,000 shops in other countries. Lidl ranks second at 11,200 stores, distributed in 32 countries.
Aldi may have an advantage in the US but it is easily outnumbered by Lidl stores internationally. Lidl has also increased their expansion. The company aims to have an additional 50 stores operating by the end of 2021.
Aldi is a brand that shoppers find attractive when they first try it. Aldi consumers who buy Lidl products are likely to be equally impressed.
Reviewers sometimes preferred Lidl’s quality over Aldi because the produce seemed fresher.
This comparison makes sense since people often complain about Aldi’s produce sections being too inconsistent.
Lidl is the only supermarket that offers freshly baked bread. It is literally translated as “fresh-baked” which means the product was baked right in-store, and placed on-sale that day.
Plastic packaging is not as prevalent on produce. A shopper noticed that there wasn’t much bagged produce in Lidl. A third noticed that Lidl’s produce section was larger.
Lidl also has bulk nuts. Lidl has the perfect place for bakers! You can purchase exactly how many nuts you require, and not more or less. Snack-lovers who are more serious can shop in bulk and stay stocked for a long time.
International food – Lidl carries a surprising selection of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food, like ready-made falafel patties (boxed, too) and bottled tahini, as well as Turkish-style pizza, stuffed cabbage, couscous, and a trio of gelato flavors.
Frozen meals – Aldi does not carry frozen dinners in America. This is something we would love more than anything. This makes for an easy and fast lunch or dinner.
More brand names – While Lidl claims that about 80 percent of its stock comes from its private store label (compared to Aldi’s 90 percent) it looks like a lot less! Lidl actually sells a lot of trusted brands like King’s Hawaiian Rolls, Wholly Guacamole or Daisy Sour Cream.
Aldi only offers gift cards in the holidays, but Lidl has them all year. Gap Home Depot, Ulta, Ulta, Amazon and others are some examples.
Aside from the different products Lidl and Aldi sell, the feel inside stores is a varied experience as well. Here are some key contrasts.
Aldi shoppers don’t need quarters – There is nothing more frustrating than arriving at Aldi with a large haul of goods and having no quarter. Lidl doesn’t rent carts so this problem is solved. The best part is that you won’t be stuck carrying around one of the huge men if you need just a couple items. Lidl has little half-size carts for easier maneuverability around the store.
Lidl shops are larger than Aldi stores. Aldi’s stores measure around 12,000sqft while your typical Lidl measures in at around 20,000sqft.
Check-out – Aldi is well-known for its sitting cashiers who, they found, can scan faster while seated. At Lidl, though, cashiers are going to be standing.
Cashiers can scan more items if the shoppers are slower than the cashier and they won’t have to be concerned about lost items.
Aldi store music – Even though the stores may be small, it can feel like they’re missing something. Aldi doesn’t charge anyone for music rights. This helps to keep costs low.
Lidl will pay to have some music played so you’ll likely find a song that is familiar to you while shopping in the stores.
Lidl operates myLidl – A shoppers club program that is similar to Amazon’s, with an app. In the mobile app, shoppers can play “games”, where they simply have to buy groceries at Lidl.
A reward is given to a customer who wins a game by spending a specific amount. This coupon will give them a discount on their next visit.
Lidl and Aldi are separated by their app that offers coupon codes for the general store as well as monthly game prizes. Aldi has very few coupons.
You can also order your groceries through the app. Aldi partners with Instacart to offer mobile grocery shopping.

Aldi, more like German family than their siblings, has many distinct differences from Lidl. Despite having a similar goal, which is to corner the market on affordable staples while providing high-end specialty products, Lidl’s end-goal is different.
Are Aldi and Lidl in America going to be overtaken by Lidl? It’s too early to tell, but as the two international grocery giants battle it out, the customers will surely benefit.
Which is more expensive, Aldi or Lidl?
Aldi narrowly beat Lidl, the cheapest supermarket in 2020, to be crowned the cheapest supermarket. However, Lidl was found to be the cheapest supermarket in December, at PS23.29 for a basket of 22 groceries, just beating Aldi where the basket was priced at PS23.64.Jan 19, 2022
Do Aldi And Lidl Have The Same Prices?
Aldi’s and Lidl’s supermarkets can be hard to tell apart. The names of both stores sound almost identical. Both are known for low prices, copycat products at a discount, and quick checkouts. … The basket featured both own-brand products, such as eggs and apples. It also included branded products such Hovis wholemeal bread.
Comparison of Aldi and Lidl
Aldi and Lidl may be unique because of their private labeled items but the latter is more popular. Lidl has a higher promotional value when compared to Aldi. Lidl employs EDLP promotion for non-foods unlike Aldi. … Lidl was formed in 1930, much later than Aldi.
Are Lidl And Aldi Owned By Two Brothers?
Aldi and Lidl are both owned by Germans but their owners are not related. Josef Schwarz began his career in the grocery trade in the 1930’s. In 1973, he opened the first Lidl Store.
