History
It would be magnificent to have a San Diego zoo. I have the guts to build one. Harry M. Wegeforth , after hearing a lion roar at the 1915 Panama-California Exposition The San Diego Zoo grew out of exotic animal exhibitions abandoned after the 1915 Panama-California Exposition Harry M. Wegeforth founded the Zoological Society of San Diego, meeting October 2, 1916, which initially followed precedents set by the New York Zoological Society Bronx Zoo . The president of the society, he was there until 1941.
Balboa Park, a land parcel that had been set aside for permanent use in August 1921 was purchased by the city. It was agreed by the city attorney that the animal population would remain in city hands and would be administered through the zoo.
After the Exposition, the zoo moved in the subsequent year. The Exposition animals were not the only additions to the Zoo's collection. Ellen Browning Scripps, a former Wonderland Amusement Park owner, also funded a fence to surround the Zoo so it could start charging an entry fee.
Zoo. Nooz began in 1925.
The first You video was "Me at zoo", which was filmed at San Diego Zoo. Tube uploaded by Jawed Karim Fairbuck. He was appointed director of San Diego Zoo by Wegeforth on June 13, 1923.
William T. Hornaday had recommended Buck to the Bronx Zoo Director. Buck however quickly disagreed with Wegeforth. He left the Zoo three months later to return to animal collection.
After several other equally short-lived zoo directors, Wegeforth appointed the zoo's bookkeeper, Belle Benchley , to the position of executive secretary, in effect zoo director; she was given the actual title of zoo director a few years later. Between 1925 and 1953 she served as the zoo's director.
Features
There is a bus service that takes visitors around 75% of the park. There is also an overhead gondola lift called the Skyfari, providing an aerial view of the zoo. Built in 1969 by Bern's Von Roll tramway company, the Skyfari provides a panoramic view of San Diego Zoo Skyfari. It is common for exhibits to be designed around particular habitats. Many animals and native plants can live side-by side in an exhibit. An African rain forest rhinoceros (pictured here) is one example of an exhibit. In the summer, the Arctic taiga plumeria tundra features polar bears. These are some of the most impressive free-flight bird aviaries, such as the Owens Aviary or the Scripps Aviary. Many exhibits are "natural", with invisible wires and darkened blinds (to view birds), and accessible pools and open-air moats (for large mammals).
San Diego Zoo Safari Park hosts animals and is more open than that at the zoo. Regular exchanges take place between these two sites, and between San Diego Zoo Zoo and any other zoos in the world. This is done according to the Species Survival Plan. California's temperate and sunny maritime climate makes it a great location for many animals and plants. Apart from a wide range of mammals and reptiles it has an impressive collection, the arboretum preserves its ground with rare plant collections. There are more than 700,000.
As part of the Zoo's gardening effort, rare animal foods can be grown. For example, 40 varieties of bamboo were raised for the pandas when they were at the zoo on long-term loan from China . You can also find 18 varieties in the San Diego Zoo's eucalyptus forest. This is to provide food for its koalas. All of the San Diego Zoo employees and keepers are part of Teamsters Union Local 481

Is La Zoo Or San Diego Zoo Better?
