Target is a wonderful place to shop for pet items. However, are you allowed to bring your dog into Target? This is my research on Target’s policy regarding pets.
Do Dogs Are Allowed in Target By 2022
Target maintains strict pet policies. Target employees cannot allow their dogs to enter any Target store after 2022. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (the Americans with Disabilities Act), service animals are permitted to enter Target along with their owners who meet certain guidelines.
Why Are Pet Dogs Not Allowed In Target?
Target has no dogs allowed in its store.
Target’s grocery department sold open and unpacked foodstuffs, increasing the likelihood of animal bacterial or contamination.
The FDA states that pets are prohibited from grocery stores and food preparation areas. Target has a no-pet policy that applies across their stores, but some locations may enforce it more strictly.
What is the maximum number of service dogs allowed in Target?
Service dogs are permitted in Target. Every business must have a valid, certified service animal according to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
You can also include dogs who are trained to assist the handicapped person by performing tasks or working with them.
This includes physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental support work and tasks directly related to the owner’s disability. Target allows these animals into its premises, but they must remain within close reach of their owners.
Is a Service Dog a Target Pet?
According to the ADA and Target’s pet policy, types of service dogs fall under six main categories of work or tasks that are completed by the individual dog. They include:
Guide Dogs – To help visually impaired or blind people safely walk.
Hearable dogs – These can help their owners who are deaf, hard of hearing or have difficulty understanding the world.
Medical Alert and Assist Dogs–Service dogs who sense and alert dangerous signs in case of diabetes or another measurable body symptom for other diseases.
Psychiatric Service Dogs – These dogs are certified for mental services and can help in situations of extreme PTSD or Autism.
Service Dogs for Seizure Alerts and Responses–Seizure service animals can spot an episode in advance and assist their owner.
High-trained Severe Allergy Alert dogs – These highly trained animals can detect allergies before they’re ingested.
Target will allow your service dogs to go with you if they are trained in any of the above tasks.
Can Target Ask If Your Dog Is A Service Dog?
Employees are prohibited from asking customers with service animals to show documentation or prove their disabilities.
Target employees are only allowed to ask two questions: If the animal was a service dog and what tasks it performs, then they can also inquire about the purpose of the dog. It is illegal for employees to further inquire or request proof.
Target workers will easily recognize a service dog if it is wearing a neon-colored service vest or harness.
It is legal in certain states to use it as a form of identification for service dogs.
Target Stores Allow Service dogs
ADA Title II and Title III allow service animals entry into otherwise pet-free places.
Individual training is required for service dogs to be able to assist in dangerous or life-threatening situations.
These services are vital to your health and well being. Service animals must accompany their owners. Target makes a special exception to the no-pet policy.
Are Service Dogs In-Training Allowed Into Target?
The ADA does not explicitly cover situations where service dogs in training may be brought into public facilities and areas, but several states have their own laws on what spaces these trainee animals are allowed access to.
Service dogs that are in training under ADA Handler responsibility still have to be controlled, housebroken and vaccinated according to state and local laws.
Are You able to take your dog with you into Target?
Target associates may also object to the service dog classification.
Are you a dog owner?
Target does not allow dogs, but you may have to take your dog along.
Most dogs can be allowed to run around outside, provided they are secured tightly to their leash and have plenty of shelter or shade.
Do not leave your dog alone for too long.
Can You Bring Dogs Into Any Grocery Stores?
Target, like all other grocery stores, must limit access to live animals according to the Food and Drug Administration Food Guide. They are food establishments as well as restaurants.
It is illegal to bring pets into environments that involve food sales and preparation.
Other customers could have allergies, or fear about pets, and pets cannot be allowed in grocery stores.
Conclusion: Dogs are allowed at Target.
Target does not allow pets to enter the building due to its strict policy regarding pet ownership and FDA codes for food service and grocery. If your service dog is approved by the ADA, you can bring them into Target. The acceptance of therapy and emotional support dogs as service dogs is not permitted in-store.
