Can Walmart Check Your Receipt In 2022?
Walmart workers may request that you check your receipt prior to you leaving the store, but you’re free to refuse. Additionally, due to the “Shopkeeper’s Privilege” laws, Walmart associates can force you to show your receipt and even detain you in the store if they suspect you of shoplifting.
What Does a Walmart Receipt Verification Mean?

According to Walmart spokespersons, every receipt will be checked before customers leave.
But, just because you were asked to produce your receipt does not automatically mean that you may be suspected of shoplifting.

In Costco stores, the rules may be different. You will need to present your receipt in order for you to become a member.
Walmart can scan my receipt?
Walmart associates might ask you to scan your receipt. This is generally only required if your sensors have been activated at the entrance when you exit the store.
However, just because a Walmart employee asks for your receipt to be scanned does not necessarily mean you have been suspected of theft.

Be assured that you won’t lose your receipt if it is not before you go to Walmart. After you discover that you have lost your receipt, you can use the payment card to prove payment.
Walmart’s online receipt lookup tool will allow you to create a digital receipt of your purchase and give it instead to a Walmart associate. You just need to enter your purchase information and the location.
You can also return to the associate who served you and ask them to verify that you paid for your products.
Walmart: Can You Prevent Me From Leaving?
Walmart can’t take any other action because you refused to give your receipt to associates. Receipt checks are voluntary.
If the shopkeeper has reasonable suspicion that you are shoplifting, they can detain you in-store.
The definition of “reasonable suspicion”, however, will differ from one state to the next. It will generally be determined by observation of merchandise being taken or customer statements or surveillance footage.
Without this suspicion, associates cannot stand in your way when you leave or try to physically detain you.
Why Does Walmart Check Receipts Now?
Walmart hasn’t always checked receipts as frequently as they do now.
One factor driving the change is an increase in the fight against theft. This was the reason why $3 billion of Walmart’s 2015 losses were accounted. This was just 1% of Walmart’s overall revenue.
Also, the self-checkout machine was recently added to Walmart stores.
With a self-checkout machine, it’s far easier to bag a product from your basket without scanning it.
It is possible that there were more employees stationed at exit doors checking that each shopper had a receipt that matches the product in their bag. Walmart Canadian stores confirmed this.

Walmart will ask for your receipt to be checked before you leave. In reality, this is quite common due to large revenue losses from theft.
