Superstore is a comedy that aired from March 2015 to March 2021. The 30-minute show followed the life and adventures of an assortment of workers at a major discount shop.
Walmart’s Superstore:
Cloud 9 (the hypermarket shown in Superstore) bears many similarities to Walmart. But, there has never been any official confirmation that Walmart is actually the setting for the fictional place. Cloud 9 is an amalgamation of Target and Walmart elements, the latter being referred to in the show’s pilot.
Is Cloud 9 Real?
Cloud 9 is the fictional hypermarket that Superstore portrays. Although it is fictional, the hypermarket bears many similarities to big-box chain retail stores.
According to the Superstore Wiki page, Cloud 9 corporate is based in Chicago but has locations all across the world.
They have a lot to complain about in terms of its fictional employment practices. Workers aren’t paid overtime, maternity or health insurance.
Only one shift per employee at Cloud9 can use the restroom, while employees only get 15 minutes to eat lunch.
Similar to real corporate offices, the main office controls all locks, music and temperature for each store.
Cloud 9 also has a brand name, similar to Walmart Great Value.
Is Superstore A Parody Of Walmart?
Superstore can be described as a parody on the Walmart experience if Oxford Languages is taken at its word.
However, the real Walmart probably gives Superstore a run for its money in the exaggeration department.
Take a look at these stories by Walmart employees about the crazy they’ve seen.
Sometimes life is even more astonishing than fiction.
Walmart Superstore: Was the Writer of Superstore a Walmart Employee?
It doesn’t seem that Walmart writers and producers were actually employed by them, but they did work with OUR Walmart.
OUR Walmart (now known as United4Respect) is a nonprofit labor advocacy organization that advocates for more equality and equity in the retail sector.
Composed of both former and current employees, it’s no wonder OUR Walmart/United4Respect was able to help the creators at Superstore portray ultra-realistic scenarios.
What if Superstore was filmed in an actual store?
Showbiz Cheatsheet reports that some actors mistakenly thought they were employees. They were often asked where items were.
Producing the second season had been a success. Filming took place at Universal Studios, California. It was on a three-story soundstage.
Walmart Supercenter covers an average of 182,000 square feet. However, this set was not going to have that many people.
In order to make it appear like a large building, the crew installs mirrors in 22,000 square feet. The illusion is that the store can stretch for much more.
The scanners and checkout registers in the Fresh & Easy store are real and were repurposed.
Superstore’s Products: Is It Real?
Superstore has many brands that you can recognize if you look long enough.
Superstore granted clearance agreements to these brands such as Keurig or Pepsi. This allows them display their labels on screen.
Quora comments suggest that the brands may have actually paid Superstore to place the products.
It doesn’t matter what, the set feels more authentic when it is paired with Cloud 9 store brands.
Cloud 9 is a familiar, if not frighteningly familiar, store compared with the Walmart stores our family visits.
You can find out more information about Walmart by checking if Walmart is a part of Wayfair and whether Walmart offers a tax-exempt plan. Also, check if Walmart accepts VSP and EyeMed.
Cloud 9’s Superstore employees and Cloud 9 certainly feel like Walmart. But none of its creators have ever made an official statement stating this.
I think that’s wise, because a show like Superstore speaks to the universal experience of retail workers everywhere, whether it’s Walmart, Target or any other department store out there.

Cloud 9 Superstore is an imaginary hypermarket and discount store.
