Expansion of grocery stores into new countries is difficult. However, many chain restaurants are not ready for it.
Germany-based supermarket chain Aldi has been pushing outside its home boundaries for decades, first planting itself in North America in the 1970s, but while they have over 2,000 stores in the U.S., Canada remains unpopulated by their discount goods.
Aldi will soon be coming to Canada, so what is the answer? The company’s continued expansion in the U.S. might surprise you.
Is Aldi Coming To Canada In 2022?
Aldi will not be coming to Canada as of 2022. Many experts in the market believe that this move is certain, however, Aldi hasn’t made any concrete moves to expand into Canada so far.
You might be wondering why Aldi isn’t going to Canada, or if there’s enough demand for Aldi. I have all the answers.
Aldi Comes To Canada But Why Aren’t They?
Aldi appears to be determined to dominate the American discount marketplace and ignores Canada for several reasons.
Aldi’s business model centers around the low cost of everyday foods, which keeps everyone’s homes and pantries stocked.
Aldi’s prices are very competitive in America, particularly compared to smaller regional chains.
Canada has a 40 percent discount on grocery shopping, but that is only because of its budget/discount policy.
American shoppers often visit Aldi to be impressed (if not outright shocked) by their low grocery costs. But Canadians are much more likely to leave Aldi feeling satisfied.
Aldi cares about the placement of its stores. This includes laying out some core requirements that it considers when looking for new locations.
Aldi’s commitment to keeping operating costs low, to pass savings on to shoppers, makes it difficult to see Aldi reaching deep into their pockets for a market that isn’t certain of success.
Aldi has also taken the advice of Lidl. Lidl even set up a tentative headquarters outside of Toronto in Mississauga, hired employees, and explored possible sites.
Lidl abandoned their plans to close the office, and they fired all employees. Lidl decided to open their first U.S.-based store instead, a few more years later. Aldi may find the story to be a cautionary tale.
Do Shoppers Want Or Even Need Aldi In Canada?
Aldi’s marketing machine has been so successful that Canadians want Aldi shops in their discount-oriented country.
Aldi Finds can help you do this. Canadians have the ability to buy cheap cereals and flours. But Aldi Findings would draw people with character pets, outdoor seating, and exercise bikes at ridiculously low Aldi prices.
Canada: Aldi Stores
Aldi might start by exploring the larger Canadian cities of Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. They have combined a population totaling 10.5 million. Canada’s population density being what it is, Aldi would likely stick to bigger cities and urban centers, especially at first.

Aldi has not indicated that they will be coming to Canada in any near future.
Aldi moving to Canada from Canada is likely to require some more research and planning.
