Every single day, millions of mailpieces are delivered to addresses across the United States by the United States Postal Service.
However, sometimes the Post Office has to send packages back because they are not delivered.
If you can’t get down to the Post Office right away, you might wonder: How long does USPS hold packages? Below is the solution to your problem.
How Long Does USPS Hold Packages In 2022?
The United States Postal Service keeps packages in its possession for up to fifteen days. USPS will issue a second, final notice in every case a few days later. All packages will be returned to their sender once they have been received after 15 days.
How can you find out whether your package has been held by USPS
U.S. If your U.S. Postal Service carrier attempts delivery of a package, but is unable to do so, the carrier will leave you a yellow-colored PS Form 3849.
The PS Form 3849 is the Delivery Notice/Reminder/Receipt, and it’s the note that there is an item waiting for you in your local Post Office.
According to my experiences, the carrier of postal mail will place the note directly at the top so that it is visible from the rest and not obscured among other envelopes.
However, what happens if your parcel is misplaced? What if you accidentally miss it?
You don’t have to be worried, as the Post Office will send a second and final notice, usually three to five working days following the attempted delivery.
The form 3849 looks the same, except that there’s an area at the bottom that has “Final Notice” written in it. This means the deadline to pick up your parcel is fast approaching.
There is also a space where the postal carrier can enter the date that the holding period is over and the parcel will be sent back to the return address.
However, there is an exception to the 15 day holding policy: Priority Mail Express items can only be held for five working days. The Second/Final notices are given after three business days.
How can I find where my USPS parcel is?
If your local Post Office is not located within a small area or in a city, it’s likely that you know where you can pick up your mail.
You might wonder how to locate the Post Office that holds your package if you move near one of these locations.
According to USPS.com, you can learn this information in one of two ways.
The USPS Tracking Page for your parcel will show you the destination once your tracking information has been updated.
If that is not possible, please call 1-800-ASK USPS (1 800-275-8777), and ask for a customer representative.
How Do You Pick Up A USPS Package?
It is easy to pick up the USPS package being held.
You will need to have your PS Form 384 and a valid photo ID. For some persons, this may be a driver’s licence; for others, it could be a passport, or an ID card.
They’ll ask you to sign your form if it’s not yet signed. Then, they will check your ID and make sure that the signatures, names, faces, and addresses are correct.
Is it possible for someone else to pick up your package from the Post Office?
Authorize someone to take your package from the Post Office.
The PS Form 3829 is not acceptable. You can write, however, something along these lines on a sheet of white paper.
(Named of the retriever) has my authorization to pick up mail at (Your Name).
Then, sign this note.
How Long does USPS hold packages to a PO Box for?
The Post Office will notify you by mail if you receive an item that is not suitable for your PO Box.
They will usually hold the package for 15 days. The service that was used to send it will affect the time frame.
What Happens When You Forget to Pick Up a Package From the Post Office
USPS attempts, after the period ends, to send the package back.
Sometimes it may be impossible to return due to the absence of a return address.
Mail could be left in these situations to go to the Dead Mail zone, which is where postal workers try find unidentified addresses and return the packages.
The good news: If you miss your holding period, there is still a chance your package can make its way to you.
This isn’t an easy task (it may be on the way back to you), but it is possible.
If the package could not be returned to the sender, it may be in a Mail Recovery Center (one is in GA and one is in MN).
Once the package is scanned, it will be kept for 60 more days, or if its value exceeds $25. During this time, you are able to take action.
To search for your package, you will need to complete a Mail Recovery Center Request.
This especially includes barcode/Tracking info and the packaging size, as well as the contents of the package (in as much detail as you can manage).
Next, wait. USPS will do its best to locate your package and get it back to you.
The lesson is to not miss the initial 15-day deadline for collecting a package from your Post Office.

USPS stores most nondeliverable parcels for 15 days. It notifies recipients twice that a parcel is being held at the Post Office.
Your PS Form 3849 is all you need. You can also send someone to get it.
Why Are All My Packages Delayed 2022?
There are many reasons why your USPS tracking information may not be updated. These include inclement weather, busy buying seasons, missorted packages, or inclement weather.
