Best Multi Tool
The Pick
Leatherman Skeletool (CX) The most versatile multi-tool. It is slim and lightweight and focuses only on the essentials. It is lightweight and easy-to-use, as well as built for durability.
The Skeletool CX was our favorite multi-tool after all of the testing. It retails for $80 at Walmart and $80 at REI. You can use one hand to deploy the knife and lock it. The high-quality, 154CM blade steel also holds its edge better than other multi-tool knives. Some multi-tools require a belt sheath because they are too bulky. The Skeletool’s lighter weight makes it easy to fit in a pocket. You can clip it onto your belt, backpack or with a clip that attaches to your bag. CX’s CX pliers are easy to unfold, can pull small splinters with precision, and have a comfortable grip thanks to their asymmetrical handle. These pliers can be used to remove most standard screws with their two flathead, and Phillips head screwdrivers. You get a 25 year warranty. It is well-built and sturdy. Leathermans, which we own and have used for over a decade, are flawless.
A Full-Size Multi-Tool that is Best
Although the Free P2 offers a wider range of tools than the Skeletool (including scissors and package openers), the most important difference is the fact that the entire tool set, even the pliers can be used one-handed.
Amazon. $120 Huckberry. $120 REI. For those who want a more powerful multi-tool, but still have a lot of fun using it, the Leatherman Free P2 will be able to do all that and much more. Leatherman has a new multi-tool design with the Free P2 in 2019. With all handles closed you can open and access every tool with just one hand. With a simple flick of your wrist, you can also use the pliers single-handedly. Other full-sized multitools like Wave+ and the Free P2 became cumbersome after we tried it out for several weeks. The Free P2 has more weight than the Skeletool at 2 1/2 ounces. However, the Free P2’s design is slimmer and sleeker, while it comes with a pocketclip. Although it has more weight to it, we never found it unwieldy or awkward to carry.
Weighing 7.5 ounces. Blade length 2 1/2 inches. Tools include: Regular pliers (needle nose pliers), regular pliers; replaceable wire cutters and replaceable hard cutters; electrical crimper and wire stripper; wire stripper; wire cutters and replaceable wire cutters; wire stripper, electric crimper and wire stripper; wire crimper and wire stripper; wire crimper and wire stripper; wire crimper and wire cutters), extra-small screwdrivers) and small screwdriverscres to take standard 1 inch bits. It’s precision, however, it is bulky and doesn’s of the accuracy of Leatherman’s.
Amazon *The price is $80 at the time this article was published.
SOG PowerAccess Deluxe is another large multi-tool. This one however places much more emphasis on the screwdrivers as well as the pliers. The pivot point in the middle is geared. This improves the power of the wire cutters, pliers, and allows you to easily open it one-handed. This added strength enabled the multi-tool to handle rusted or stuck bolts well. The tool also cuts wire quickly, but heavy-gauge sheep fencing can cause damage. This SOG can use standard 1-inch bits and accepts two knives blades. Unfortunately, the SOG model is less easy to operate than the Leatherman Free P2.

Multi-tools have been tested for seven years. We now own 33 different models. In our 2021 review we will be evaluating 21 of the most popular models, as well as those that were donated to us by veteran testers. The tools are used by us for many months as we tackle various tasks at home and in the backcountry. Each model is evaluated for functionality, portability, ergonomics, construction and portability. We have decades of collective handyman experience, unmatched attention and unparalleled detail. Every product we test is at least for a few weeks. Sometimes, products are tested over 6+ years. We take the time to research and present our results for your decision-making.

What We Tested
Tests required us to use every feature or tool of every model. They were awarded a score from 1 to 5, and we then calculated the average scores of each score to compare that model to the mythical multitool. Manufacturers often list different functions of tools in descriptions to make it easier for users to count them. For instance, they may count pliers three times or four times depending on whether they are wire cutters, needle-nose, regular, and/or strippers. We counted them all as one because the functions of these tools are usually performed by one standard, full-sized tool.
Our experiment involved the cutting of rope, twines, lampwires, indoor branch wires 14 gauge, branches and maple saplings as well as plastic. Additionally, we stripped and crimped wires. The pliers were used to grasp, stretch, twist and turn various hardware pieces. We made maple branches and white pine boards. We opened cans, bottles, and shipping boxes. An old British carburetor was disassembled, along with an electrical junction box and standard three-prong outlets. We reassembled them all. Finally, we file wood, metal, as well our own nails. We didn’t leave any tool behind.
We summed up all the data, made notes, and then came to our conclusions. Below, you’ll find the best multitools available, some surprising values, and maybe a cautionary tale.
This is the Best Multi-Tools for Any Task
The Swiss Army knife has lodged itself so firmly into Americana that it has become a metaphor for versatility. At one point or another, you have heard it: “The Swiss Army Knife of Blank,” which means it is capable of dealing with a range of situations. It’s true that this small gadget doesn’t have the same quality as the larger version, whether the corkscrew is used or the screwdriver. But it’s still useful. This is all about convenience. It’s all about convenience.
Leatherman came up with the folding pair of scissors that made it possible to make the Multi-Tool a worldwide hit. Multi-tools come in many sizes and shapes from an incredible number of companies. How many are well-made? For months, I tested several models. To test them, I used them as a tool to assemble picture frames and cut open bottles. These models did the job exceptionally well.

All-around Best
Leatherman, which is shorthand for Multi-Tool, has been popular for good reasons. This company is well-known for their excellent quality build. It is possible to flip the tool out and retract it forcefully, but they do so very smoothly. Each miniature-tool’s finishing touches are excellent. Leatherman makes many different options. My favorite is definitely the Wave Plus.
You will find two steel knives in the package, one of which has a straight edge while the other is serrated. This knife is ideal for cutting fibrous materials such as rope. It is made from 420HC steel, which has high carbon content. The edge will not stay sharp for long but can easily be sharpened up. You will also find a variety of other tools such as a wood-and metal file and a diamond-coated one, as well as Phillips bits and scissors. A ruler 8 inches in length, a wire cutter, and even a can and bottle opener are all included.
Leatherman’s Charge range was its finest multi-tools. Today, Wave Plus has almost identical features at a fraction of the price. The company also offers a 25 year warranty and will replace or repair any parts that you send to their Portland facility. Customers have told many tales of receiving replacement tools or blades to replace their multi-tools over the years.

The more basic models include a scraper, sanding and cutting instrument. However, the most expensive options can offer over 60 attachments to cater to almost every type of DIY project.
