Construction
Petco Park in construction 2001
San Diego Ballpark Builders, in partnership with Clark Construction, ROEL Construction, and Douglas E. Barnhart, Inc., constructed the ballpark. Partially funded by the Center City Development Corporation, the San Diego Redevelopment Agency and the San Diego Redevelopment Agency, the construction cost was more than $450million. This stadium was built as part of a larger plan to revive San Diego's old downtown. It is situated across Harbor Drive, two blocks from San Diego Convention Center and the main entrance, behind home plate, is just two blocks from San Diego Trolley's downtown terminal. Marlon C. Cook, a San Diego native and recipient of the Boys & Girls Club Memorial Park's outstanding community involvement, placed the first home plate after completion.
Construction was to be completed for 2002, but construction was temporarily halted due to legal and political issues. The court ruling that invalidated an existing ballot proposition (approving city's share of stadium financing package) was part of this decision. This required that it be brought to voters again. Another delay occurred in construction due to the Western Metal Supply Co. Building, which is a historical landmark. Negotiations with the preservation community led to the builders agreeing to restore the building to conform to the Secretary of the Interior Standards. After renovations, the building was added to the stadium's design.
Baseball Milestones
Petco Park's first game of baseball was played on March 11, 2004. This was part in a tournament for four NCAA teams hosted by San Diego State University San Diego State Aztecs baseball. Houston is a former Padres player and Houston head coach. It was the largest attended game in college baseball history.
Lance Zawadzki scored the first hit with a double.
There was a lot of pushing and pulling before the gates were opened at 4:45 p.m. as many Padres loyal tried to get in the way of the first people to visit Petco Park. Brent Walker (17 years old) was the first to enter Petco Park. Walker was sporting a San Francisco Giants jersey and said that he was proud of being the first fan to enter. San Diego Padres won their regular season opener and beat the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings.
On April 15, 2004, Mark Loretta hit the first Padre home run off of Hideo Nomo of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mike Hill was the bartender at Kansas City Barbecue when Mike caught it.
Golf
Petco Park has collaborated with Callaway Golf Company for the opening of a par-3 9-hole golf course at the stadium in November 2015.
The holes are built within the outfield while many of the tees are in the upper decks of the stadium.
Modifications
Petco Park has been described by some as "extremely pitcher's" park. During the 2005-06 offseason, Padres CEO Sandy Alderson adjusted the dimensions in right-center field in an attempt to make it more hitter friendly.
Petco Park placed 29th in hits for 2008 and 30th out 30 in home runs in Major League Baseball ballparks.
The Padres revealed that after 2012's season ended, they planned to move the fences into the new ballpark to be more friendly to hitters. The right-center wall in left field was moved to 402 feet (123m) from 390 feet (1120m), while the right-center wall in right field was moved to 411 feet (12m) from 391 feet (119m) and the right field wall moved to 360 feet (110m) from 349 feet (106m). Additionally, the bullpen for the visiting team was relocated from right-field foul territory to right field, just behind the Padres bullpen. Also, the right field wall was lowered to 11 feet (3.4m) and moved to 8 feet (2.24m).
Following the close of the 2014 season renovations began. These include a new HD video board, slight changes to the distance to the left-field fence, and removal of some seats in the middle deck (which were replaced with standing-room seating). Opening Day 2015 saw the completion of all these alterations including the videoboard.

The Holiday Bowl will be moving to downtown San Diego after the council agreed to lift a No-Football restraint from San Diego's contract with The Padres

Tuesday's vote by San Diego City Council was unanimous. It lifted the ban on no-football in the city's contract for a stadium with the Baseball Club. Thus, the San Diego ballpark voters approved in 1998 can be transformed into a multipurpose facility.
As the Holiday Bowl's only hope of survival, the action is framed as a victory for the city, the team, and for the $2.2million in upgrades that will allow for an increase in capacity, from 44,500 to 50,000. This includes standing-room-only sections.
Erik Greupner from the Padres said that City Council approval "is an exciting step which allows the Holiday Bowl stay in San Diego, and continue to offer economic, tourism and culture benefits to our region." "Petco Park is San Diego's iconic sports and entertainment venue, and it will elevate the Holiday Bowl experience in the heart of downtown San Diego." With the action, San Diego is on the hook for 30 percent of the stadium modifications expenses, or $650,000, as required by the pre-existing terms of the stadium's joint-use agreement. In addition, the city has 30 percent guaranteed proceeds from events. It will cost the Padres a minimum of $30,000 to build the event. After that, they'll bill the city using revenue credits.
A financial model by the Padres shows that the city can still expect to take home $9948,825 even after taking out the credits.
Proposition C (a memorandum agreement between San Diego agencies and Padres) was approved by San Diego voters in November 1998. It described the terms of usage, costs, and fees associated with what was called a ballpark. On Tuesday, the Mayor can lift the restriction. Also, the City Council made necessary decisions that the amended was, among others, in the best interest city. It does not reduce or increase city obligations.

San Diego, Ca
The City of San Diego, also known as America's Finest City, is home to the Padres, and Petco Park. This park is one of the most prestigious in baseball. The Padres played in Jack Murphy Stadium from 1969 to 2003, when they were founded. This stadium was shared by the Chargers (NFL), in Mission Valley. Larry Lucchino of Baltimore Orioles built Camden Yards. In 1995, he was named President of Padres.
The club announced in 1996 that it would build a new ballpark downtown San Diego. San Diego voters approved bonding for the construction of a new sports complex after 1998's National League Championship. The original plan was for the ballpark to open in 2002. Construction was delayed by financial problems that occurred in October 2000. The City of San Diego issued a $166million bond in November 2001 to allow construction to resume. Petco Animal Supplies, Inc., purchased the rights to name the park for $60million over 22-years.
The Padres' first ever game against San Francisco Giants at Petco Park on April 8th 2004 marked a new chapter in franchise history. No longer did the club have to play at a cavernous stadium. San Diego's Petco Park was built and opened in San Diego, which helped to revitalize downtown. White steel and sandstone facades give the ballpark a Southern California vibe. Leading up to the entrance of the ballpark, fans pass by a palm tree court and water walls. The view from Petco Park is spectacular. Each of the 42,500-seat blue seats is located near the field, and they face toward the pitcher's mound. The grandstand is three-tiered and extends from right field foulpole to homeplate to left field foulpole. This is the Western Metal Supply Building. It's a brick multi-story building constructed in 1909. It was not demolished by the Padres, but it became a distinctive element in the baseball park.
