Midway Virtual Experience
The History
The USS Midway was the United States' longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, from 1945 to 1992. The carrier was home to approximately 200,000 Sailors, and is known for many naval aviation innovations as well as humanitarian missions. It was the only carrier to serve the entire length of the Cold War and beyond. It can be found in San Diego Midway as a museum ship. By 2012 annual visitation exceeded 1 million visitors. As of 2015 Midway is the most popular naval warship museum in the United States.
There are more than 13,000 museum members and 700 events each year. This includes more than 400 Navy active-duty retirements, reenlistments, changes of command, and over 400 Navy active-duty Navy retirements. The museum also hosts approximately 50,000 students on field trips and 5,000 children in its overnight program annually.
A self-guided audio tour is included with admission. Narrated by ex-Midway Sailors to over 60 locations including sleeping quarters and engine room. Additional features include cockpits, video, flight simulators, audio for kids, and climb-aboard planes.
The museum hosts private events as well as several other events. The nationally-televised NCAA basketball match between San Diego State University Syracuse University and San Diego State University has been filmed on Midway by the Travel Channel Discovery Channel FOX News The Bachelor Extreme Makeover History Channel Military Channel. Each November the museum hosts the nationally-televised "Battle on the Midway", an annual showcase of collegiate wrestling.
More than 25.000 members now belong to the club. The 2017 addition of "The Battle of Midway Theater", a high definition, holographic cinema theater to enhance the experience of movie-going, was a major milestone. The museum will also add in 2019, besides its current four simulators, a virtual reality flight simulation ride.

The health and safety of the USS Midway Museum guests, members, staff and volunteers remains our top priority. The museum has been temporarily shut down due to the recently issued Regional Stay-At Home order by the Southern California state health officials.
