Histories
It was established by the Marine Biological Association of San Diego in 1903 to perform marine research in local waters of Pacific Ocean. The aquarium was later named Scripps Institution of Oceanography after Ellen Browning Scripps E.W. Scripps is part the Scripps family, which includes newspaper pioneers. The founders built and maintained a small public aquarium and museum to communicate their discoveries to the world.
They outgrew the small laboratory they had in the Hotel del Coronado boathouse and made the move to La Jolla Cove, where they established a laboratory. The city of San Diego held a public auction in which the group purchased the 174-acre (70 ha), La Jolla Shores property for $1,000. 1910 was the year that construction began on the permanent structure. Today, the Scripps site has the Old Scripps Building listed on National Register of Historic Places. It was the Scripps campus that saw the construction of the first permanent building dedicated to aquariums in 1915. The small, wooden structure contained 19 tanks ranging in size from 96 to 228 U.S. gallons (360 to 860 l). In a nearby building was the location of an oceanographic museum. The institution's name changed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1925 to recognize the growing faculty's widened range of studies.
The Scripps Aquarium-Museum opened in 1951 and named to honor former institution director T. Wayland Vaughan. Over 40 years, this three-story facility was used by the institution. The largest tank, weighing in at 2,600 US gallons (7,000 l), was surrounded by a museum with glass cases that showcased Scripps research projects. In less than a month, guests from all 48 US states signed the guest book.
A fund-raising campaign for an aquarium was started by the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation in 1985. They donated $6 million. JCJ Architecture of San Diego received the award for the design architect [ citation required ]. In 1992, the Birch Aquarium opened at Scripps with a current price of $14 million.
UC San Diego donated the land.
Birch Aquarium, Scripps was able to celebrate its 20th birthday in September 2012 using a new visual identity.
