Target, as of 2022 is no longer owned by Walmart. Target Corporation is the new owner of Target Corporation. Target was previously the Dayton-Hudson Corporation. The Corporation operates over 1900 discount and mass-retail stores in all 50 U.S. States under this new (and very popular) name.
Who Created Target
In 1962, the Dayton Company established Target with the intent of opening a store for bargain-seekers who wanted a quality experience.
Target began as a department-store retailer. Industry professionals thought it risky to move into mass-market retailers when Target first launched.

Dayton set out to discover the Midwest’s growing markets. He found Minneapolis the best place to grow, and built his first Dayton Dry Goods Store in Nicollet Avenue.
In 1962, Roseville was home to the first Target Store. It continued its expansion in 1966, when it moved to Denver.
After years of growth across the nation, Target Corporation was renamed to reflect the core business.
