Taylormade Tour Preferred Golf Balls Review & For Sale
Taylormade Tour PreferredX 2016 Golf Ball Review
Tour Preferred X, like before, is a five-layer construction to allow for a slight lower flight of the longer irons.
Although the compression has dropped by 1 point to 87, it is still the same compression as before. The 2014 X model feels the same. Soft Tech cast Urethane Cover is slightly thicker than usual and features 322 dimples, just like the standard ball.
On and around the green the Tour Preferred X sounded and felt a little firmer than the standard Tour Preferred and similar in a lot of ways to a Pro V1x.
Whilst high spin or higher swing speed players will probably get more performance benefit from the X, if you base your ball decision on feel around the greens, then this difference between the two Tour Preferred models is what will help you make your choice.
Other than the greenside feel and performance numbers, there are significant differences between the balls. The Tour Preferred X spins faster with a wedge. This is due to the greater compression. However, the feel is more difficult.
The Tour Preferred’s longer irons result in a higher launch and greater spin. It stops faster with less roll.
Although the driver’s performance at my swing speed was fairly similar, the Tour Preferred may have the edge since it covered the same distance with a slightly slower average swing speed.

Taylormade Tour’s Preferred Golf Ball Is Lead-Ier
Tony Covey Tony Covey. The latest in an ongoing series of poorly kept secrets was revealed. TaylorMade, officially today (it doesn’t count unless its official), announced new Tour Preferred X Golf Balls.
Sorry, guys. It is true. I was right there. There was no one here who didn’t hope for the 2014 LETHALIER. Perhaps something more powerful like SUPERDEATH NINJA (TP).
The absolute fact of the matter is that TaylorMade knows LETHAL was a stupid name. They really know this. When I discussed the subject with Josh Talge, TaylorMade’s VP of Metalwoods and Golf Balls, he suggested that in addition to the ridiculous name, packaging the balls to look like a Metallica album perhaps wasn’t the shrewdest marketing move either.
Josh was a former employee of Old Spice. When the guy whose former company brought us “I’m the man your man wants to smell like” and “I’m on a horse” willingly concedes that aspects of the previous product were a little too over the top, you might have gone just a little too far.
LETHAL was a good ball and sold quite well. However, the golf industry doesn’t have a key demographic like heavy metal.
Leave LETHAL. Go to Tour Prefer.
LETHAL Tour Pro is the same as LETHAL. It’s a serious ball for serious players (actually, it’s two golf balls). LETHAL is not going to chase away anyone before they actually hit the ball. It also has a name and packaging that are less Enter Sandman.
How Does The Taylormade Tp5 Golf Balls Compare To Other Golf Balls?
The ball class of the balls you choose will be more noticeable to you than any difference made by manufacturers. The Pro is the preferred choice for golfers. V1 and pro. V1x as the “gold standard” of golf balls but, many players will find Callaway’s Chrome Soft and TaylorMade’s new TP5 lines play the same or better.
Chrome Soft is both the shortest- and the softest. The TP5 TP5x compares closely to Titleist Pro. V1 Pro. V1 Pro. Bridgestone also produces the Bridgestone Tour B330S, and Tour B330S three-pieces. TaylorMade however produces the five-layer ball.
Don’t worry about the Name. How about The Ball!
It is not surprising, seeing as Taylor is the Tour Preferred’s most prominent position. Taylor is Made’s latest release. Made says that Tour Preferred’s ball is its best-performing to date.
We would have never guessed.
As you might imagine, there are a few key features of the new balls that Taylor. Made would like you know about, so I’ll just copy and paste them right here:
Use REACT(tm).Core to improve your ball speed and distance.
Spin Mantle ™, designed to provide consistent and precise spin rates for given shots through the bag.
Low-Drag Aerodynamics (LDP(tm), 322-dimple, designed to reduce distance from low spin shots. Also maintains a strong ball flight through the wind.
“Golfball innovations don’t happen in an instant. The process involves ongoing conversations with Tour players. These discussions have resulted in breakthrough technologies such as low drag aerodynamics to resist wind, five-layer construction that provides superior control over the entire club set, and our softest, most durable cover.” Dean Snell Vice President, Golf Ball R&D Taylor. Taylor also features Made Golf technology in Tour Preferred balls. Made is calling Soft Tech(tm). Soft Tech is marketing lingo, but maybe it’s double-speak marketing for Taylor. Made claims is softer and more durable than anything they’ve ever produced.
